In a world where every person is unique, sometimes one person can make all the difference. The "One in a Million" campaign by DKMS India shines a light on how each person’s uniqueness holds the potential to save a life. For patients with blood cancer and other blood disorders, finding a matching stem cell donor is as rare as one in a million—this campaign reminds us that we all have the power to make a big impact.
Blood cancer and blood disorders are a growing concern in India, with over 1 lakh new cases diagnosed each year. For many of these patients, conventional treatments are not enough, and a stem cell transplant becomes their best hope for survival. Unfortunately, finding a matching stem cell donor is incredibly challenging. Many people falsely believe that donating stem cells is a painful or risky procedure, or that it involves complex surgery. In reality, stem cell donation is a safe, non-surgical process, yet these misconceptions prevent many potential lifesavers from stepping forward.
Despite the urgent need, there is a shortage of registered stem cell donors in India. DKMS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting blood cancer, has stepped up to bridge this gap, having already registered over 1,50,000 potential donors. However, this number represents less than 1% of the population, which severely limits patients' chances of finding their match. DKMS continues to expand its donor base, one registration at a time, with the goal of giving every patient a better shot at finding the lifesaving match they need.
With your help, we can change the odds for blood cancer patients all over the world. By registering as a stem cell donor, you could be the one in a million someone desperately needs and offer them a second chance at life. Through our "One in a Million" campaign, we’re raising awareness of the critical need for stem cell donors and celebrating the potential that each of us has to save a life.
