Donor Story

“Let's stand together in solidarity with those fighting for their lives and make a difference in any way we can.”

Sowmiya shares her incredible experience of becoming a stem cell donor. As a medical professional, she always believed in the power of medicine and the importance of saving lives in any way possible.

Here's her journey:

“In 2021, at the Under 25 concert in Bangalore, I registered as a potential blood stem cell donor. It was a decision rooted in my deep understanding of medical science and my unwavering commitment to helping those in need.

My motivation to sign up was further fueled by a personal experience. My grandmother battled lymphoma, a form of blood cancer, which deeply impacted me. Witnessing her struggle strengthened my resolve to make a difference.

Despite my medical background, I had some initial doubts and concerns about the donation process. However, with the support of my colleagues and family, I overcame them. Their encouragement and understanding made all the difference.

Before the donation

Preparation for the donation was key. I ensured I was physically fit by maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and engaging in regular physical activity. The team at DKMS Foundation India played a crucial role in guiding me through the process, for which I'm truly grateful.

The day of collection arrived, and although I had a general idea of what to expect, I found the procedure more challenging than anticipated. I experienced discomfort due to the anticoagulant effects. However, knowing that my donation could potentially save a life kept me focused and determined.

After the donation

The aftermath of the donation brought some discomfort, including giddiness and pain at the puncture site. However, these symptoms subsided with time, leaving me with a profound sense of fulfillment and gratitude.

To the recipient of my donation, I want to extend my heartfelt wishes for a speedy recovery. Your well-being means the world to me, and I'm honored to have played a part in your journey to health. If you ever wish to meet, I'd be thrilled to connect and share in your happiness.
