My cousin, who is 12 years of age was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia 2 months ago.

Our family went through a great ordeal, just like so many families whose brothers, sisters, and children are afflicted by this frightening disease. So many of us have gone our entire lives without understanding the complications associated with this illness, but when my cousin's chemotherapy started, I realised how dire the situation was for all those suffering from this disease. In the ward where my brother is admitted, there are 16 children as young as 2 months old suffering from the disease. AML is a fast spreading disease, and on further enquiry, we realised that there's only a 25% chance of finding a donor for bone marrow transplant, which is the only way to recover from this disease. Over the past few months I have spoken to so many people suffering from AML with no donor in sight for nearly 2 years. Low registration count and lack of awareness among people about the stem cell donation process is a large factor behind this issue with finding donors. Having now been at the receiving end of this difficult situation, I urge every one of you to register - because you may not realise this but you might become the reason for life's second chance to someone.
